Travel Changes You

Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world, you change things slightly; you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life – and travel – leaves marks on you.” ~ Anthony Bourdain

It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since we lost Bourdain. I so loved his outlook and his fierceness to embrace the world – to try new things, to experience a local culture, and to get to know a people and a land through its food. Two years later, I am still watching “Parts Unknown.” I savour recorded programs on my pvr, and love feeling like I am travelling along with him through time.

One of my favourite travel experiences was to visit Colombia with my then 14 year old daughter, Ciara. I had been nervous to visit Colombia. My opinions had been shaped by news reports of Pablo Escobar. But I discovered a beautiful country that was anxious to put its past behind them, and a resilient people who touched the heart.

Our guide took us to Sante Fe de Antioquia, and as we explored, he always made sure we sampled the local fruit, and he regaled us with stories of his life and his family. It was wonderful.(And so was the Zapote!)

Don’t be afraid to try new places and take a bite out of new foods. You’ll learn about other cultures, and come home richer for the experience.

While we’re all still dreaming of travel right now, I’m helping folks make future plans. So, please do contact me if you’d like to learn more about visiting Colombia.
