Inspired by The Wonder Life – Venice

Have you seen this new show “Wonder List” on CNN hosted by Bill Weir? It’s worth a watch!  See https://www.cnn.com/shows/wonder-list  It’s described as :

CNN’s Bill Weir tells the stories of extraordinary people, places, cultures and creatures at a crossroads,

One of the first of his shows I’d watched was about Venice. Speaking about embracing your limited time (or making major changes to ensure both you and a destination survive) see https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/the-wonder-list-venice-bill-weir/index.html   Bill calls it Venice’s “sink or swim moment.” We’re at a point in time.

As he notes: “On a busy summer day, in the most popular section of the city, tourists can outnumber Venetians 600-1.
For comparison: In Manhattan, that number is 8-1.”

In addition, “People have been worrying about the impending death of Venice for centuries, but the place is in trouble, now more than ever…. And in an age of rising seas and exploding populations, Venice is a test. A test to preserve beauty, history and harmony from the greatest threats: time, tide and greed.”

How are you doing with that own test in your life?
Did you know that the city of Venice has less than 60,000 people – but has tourists of 20 million per year?  Did you also know that 70% of tourists don’t spend the night in Venice – and are in the city for roughly only 4.5 hours.  They buy bird seed (which the locals hate, as well as the environment). Here’s also a “Venice in Peril” Fund, where there is much work afoot to stop cruise ship traffic – maybe even instituting a ticketing system.
Venice is changing. There are lots of minds at work to study the tides and their impact, and the flow of tourists. And, as tourists, we have to be aware of what is happening. That is why responsible and sustainable tourism is so very important.
It’s also why I like to work with the bet possible partners to get you there, to immerse yourself in the destination, to stop and sop all it has to offer, and to hopefully even leave the place better for you having gone there.
